Hotel Room Block Closes 15 January 2005. The hotel has informed us that they're filling up for our weekend, and if you don't get your reswervation in by 15 January you may not be able to get a room at our rate or any rate at all. So book soon, folks; we've got great room rates but they could evaporate on you if you don't act quickly.

We have negotiated a rate of $79 plus tax for single king and double queen rooms at the Airtel Plaza Hotel (7277 Valjean Ave., Van Nuys CA 91406). (Triples are $89, quads are $99.) Call the hotel at 818-997-7676 or 800-2-AIRTEL to reserve your room; they haven't given us a code to use online yet, so to get the convention rate you'll need to pick up the phone.

Parking won't cost much either - $8 for overnight parking if you're staying at the hotel, and $5 for day parking.

Getting to the Airtel Plaza Hotel

By Air: LAX

While there aren't a lot of commercial flights to the Van Nuys Airport, if you fly into LAX you can take the Van Nuys FlyAway Bus Service to get to Van Nuys. One way fare is $3.50, round trip is $6 as of Nov. 2004. Once you get to the FlyAway terminal (7610 Woodley Ave., Van Nuys CA), call the hotel at 818-997-7676 and they'll come around and pick you up. (It's about half a mile away, so it shouldn't take them long.)

By Air: Van Nuys Airport

(This is the really cool part.) Van Nuys is one of the busiest airports for general aviation -- that is, small private planes. If someone close to you is a pilot and can drop you off at the airport (Hi, Kira!) ask them to park on the east side of the airport, go down to the SE corner of the airport property, and there's a gate leading into the Airtel's parking lot with an intercom on it. Buzz the front desk and they'll open the gate so you can saunter through the parking lot, stroll past the cosplayers by the pool, and waltz on up to the front desk to get your room key. (Sweeet!)

By Train: Amtrak to Van Nuys

Alternatively, if you come in via Amtrak, the hotel will pick you up at the Van Nuys train station (7724 Van Nuys Blvd., Van Nuys CA 91405) or you could take the Amtrak "Thruway" bus to the Van Nuys FlyAway terminal. It's about three miles between Amtrak and the hotel, so having your Amtrak ticket booked through to "VNF" instead of "VNC" would mean it would take the hotel shuttle less time to get to you.
