Artists' Alley Rules

Please read this before going to the Artists' Alley Application system.

Application/Lottery Process

You will not need to be preregistered to apply, but registration is required at the time of the event. Please supply your badge number if available or indicate if you are not registered.

Applications will be accepted starting Monday, 28 November, through Wednesday, 30 November 2011 (72 hours). Please type carefully; do not apply more than once. We will be deleting the duplicates. Applicants will each be assigned a number, and numbers will be drawn randomly after applications close Monday night. Sufficient names will be drawn to fill the room, plus some extras for waitlisting. If your name is picked, you will be notified and asked to pay for the space, or for your membership and space if you do not have a membership yet. Spaces that are not paid for within a week will be released to the waitlist.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Artists' Alley Guidelines 2012

Animé Los Angeles 8

  1. Artist must have a FULL-WEEKEND MEMBERSHIP to Animé Los Angeles 8, 6-8 January 2012.

  2. Any artist under 18 at the time of the convention must show consent from their parent/legal guardian in a hard-copy signed document. Hand-written consent will not be accepted. Parent/Legal Guardian does not need to be present at the time of check-in, but Artist will require to show a contact email and/or phone number in consent letter.

  3. Only one artist per half-table, for a maximum of two artists per full table. Artist is responsible for one chair and half of their table. Tables and chairs may not be moved from predetermined area. Overhead displays must demonstrate stability during all hours of the day, regardless of surroundings. Anything deemed as a safety hazard by Animé Los Angeles staff must be corrected or taken down immediately. Open areas will not be obstructed with Artist goods. Any walkways that are occupied with extra property will be removed. Artist will be given one verbal warning. Further warning will result in removal of property and/or forfeit of table.

  4. Artist must have a valid California Seller's permit, which can be obtained from The California Board of Equalization and have document (or copy) with them at all times while in Artists' Alley.

  5. Artist must present at the time of check-in: sample of work, any adult-themed works, proof of seller's permit (original or copy), government-issued photo ID (drivers license, passport, military ID; school IDs are not permitted) or hard-copy signed letter of consent (if under 18, and must have proper contact information for parent/legal guardian as mentioned above).

  6. Only products produced by the Artist are allowed in Artists' Alley.

Original self-made artwork (fan art or original characters) that has been made into prints (copies), comics, or books are allowed.

All other merchandise, such as bookmarks, calendars, pins, plushies, T-shirts, key-chains, et cetera are permitted if they were made by the artist. Mass production of the above mentioned (Taking the artwork and sending it to a printing company) is not allowed.

  7. There will be no proxy selling; Artist will not sell artwork from another studio. Artist must be present at Artists' Alley in order to sell Artist's work. Artist may not have a second party not involved in the artwork's creation selling said artwork. All sales must be conducted at Artist's table. No sales outside of the room are permitted. Artwork that violates any copyright infringement (bootlegging) is not allowed.

  8. Artist can't sell food or drink, whether it's homemade or purchased for resale.

  9. Adult-themed works that include nudity, adult situations, nocturnal mating activities, profanity, drugs, and or excessive and gory violence, all go against the Family Friendly environment of Animé Los Angeles, and must be kept out of sight of minors. Portfolios may be kept under the table until requested by adults (18+). Any sale of such items from adults will require a government-issued photo ID at the time of purchase, and must be issued a bag to hold items for consistency of convention policy.

  10. Artists' Alley will have set hours and lock down. While the doors will be locked overnight, Artist is advised to leave items at his or her own risk. Personal breaks are also at Artist's discretion. Please arrange with another Artist if a personal break is needed. Animé Los Angeles is not liable for lost or stolen items belonging to Artist.

  11. Music at low levels is permitted provided it does not disturb other Artists and does not add to the overall dynamic of the room. Any behavior not approved by Animé Los Angeles will first receive one verbal warning. Further warnings will result in forfeit of table. Any complaints and/or disputes between Artists (and/or staff) will be investigated by staff in a timely matter. If in the event that such an issue arises, please contact the Artist Alley staff.

Additional clarifications

"Do we have to be registered for the con before the artist alley's registration is up, or we can apply for AA first and then pay for both AA and the con later?"

You can just put PENDING when it asks for your membership number. We'll bill you for the space price plus your membership.

(If you ARE a member but can't find your postcard, write UNKNOWN. Or look it up here.)

"I am wondering how many half tables are being offered in the AA?"

This year's floor plan will have 72 spaces available: the room has 36 tables for artists, and another (round) table set aside for the control table.

"If I manage to get a space and pay for it/my badge/everything BUT find out later that I won't be able to make it to the convention, will I be able to get a refund?"

We had that situation come up in 2010, and we rolled them over to 2011. As far as straight refunds, as long as there are artists on the waiting list, we can let people cancel out and get refunds.

Some more facts and figures.

The Artists' Alley room will be in Meridian on the Lobby level, across from Starbucks, and will be locked up at night. Once you set up, you can leave your stuff there.

Hours will be posted. Expected to be open at least as late as Dealers Room.

There are a handful of set-asides.

A few multiple-year contributing artists have been guaranteed spaces in appreciation for their contributions to the convention.

Our Artist Guest of Honor will be in the Dealers Room, so we are not setting aside space for him here.
