Video program descriptions

Adventures of the Mini-Goddess (used as filler between shows) -- The Oh! My Goddess characters (mainly the goddesses Urd and Skuld) return, but in the "handy petite size" in this series about having fun on a very small scale. Bite-sized and fun, each episode is about five minutes long. ages: All [courtesy of Pioneer]

Blue Submarine No. 6 -- The oceans have risen, marine creatures battle humans for control of the seas, and the last hope for humanity is Blue Submarine no. 6. An action-packed sci-fi adventure. ages: 13+ [courtesy of BANDAI Entertainment]

Card Captor Sakura -- Sakura accidentally releases a deck of magical cards, each with its own wild power. With the help of the guardian beast Kero-chan (now in cute doll form), she has to recover them all before they work their mischief. Magical girl genre, but several cuts above in quality and story. Suitable for all ages, but subtitled. ages: All [courtesy of Pioneer]

Card Captor Sakura the Movie -- Sakura has won a trip to Hong Kong with her friends, but a mysterious vision leads her to an old rival of Clow Reed who is out for revenge. ages: 8+ [courtesy of Pioneer]

Dogora (live action) -- 1964, 81mins. Dir. Ishiro Honda. A rash of diamond thefts the world over baffles international police around the world, could it be more then just human? Perhaps. Behemoth jellyfish-like creatures from outer space intend to ingest the world's supply of carbon in any form unless a countermeasure can be devised by man. A semi-obscure Toho gem from the veteran hands of kaiju director Honda. [courtesy of Media Blasters]

Dragon Half -- Mink is half dragon/half human, but that doesn't stop her from falling for the heroic idol Dick Saucer, dragonslayer. But the evil king is trying to catch her so he can be with her mother (the dragon) while his daughter (the half slime) is just out to get Mink, who only is trying to get to the Dick Saucer concert. A wacky comedy. ages: 15+ [courtesy of ADV Films]

El-Hazard OVA -- Three high school students and their teacher are transported to the fantastic world of El-Hazard, a place of tranquil beauty, lost, ancient ruins, and an army of Bugrom that aren’t too bright, but are making lots of trouble. Makoto, Nanami, and Mr. Fujikawa just want to get home, but the cackling Jinnai would rather take over the place.... ages: 13+ [courtesy of Pioneer]

Eureka Seven -- "For Renton, every day's the same. Nothing ever happens, nothing changes. He goes to school, he goes home... Until one day, a giant mecha called an LFO comes crashing down on him -- literally. And inside is the most beuatiful girl he has ever seen! The thing is, though, that the girl is on the run from the military with her stolen mecha, and she's brought trouble with her. Renton will have to summon up all his courage to face his childhood hero; get the girl he's hopelessly smitten with to like him; and--oh yeah--live up to the legacy of his father who saved the world. But hey, at least it's not boring anymore." ages: 13+ [courtesy of BANDAI Entertainment]

Female Prisoner 701 Scorpion: Grudge Song (live action) -- 1973 / 92 mins. Dir. Yasuharu Hasebe. The fourth and final chapter of the Female Prisoner 701 saga finds the enigmatic actress Meiko Kaji (Lady Snowblood) on the run from the law one last time. She finds help in the form of a loner who like her was wronged by the same crooked cop who's hoping to make his career by finally sentencing The Scorpion to her fate. But as it's been proven, The Scorpion can never be broken, not even by fear of death! Note of interest: This is one of Tarantino's inspirations when making Kill Bill and it shows. [courtesy of Media Blasters]

Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa -- "On their promised day, the world moves... At the end of destiny, after light and darkness have smeared into a dim gray haze surrounding your every thought... where will pease be found? When harsh lessons wrapped in blood and tears are learned and the journey has spread over eons and far-flung dimensions, is it possible for the mysteries to be made even murkier as the future begins? In between the rays of a warming sun, the brothers Elric will conmsider the answers that are left once the Philosopher's Stone has guided their saga to an end. True sacrifice, the deep love of family, the cruel truths of life and death... There is no great magic that soothes the pain and amplifies the joy of being human. As the Fullmetal Alchemist's tale draws to a close, our heroes and villains reap what they have sown." TV PG [courtesy of Funimation]

Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (used as filler between shows in Video 2 and 9pm-9am in Video 1) -- Take Full Metal Panic and crank up the comedy. A very fun show that focuses on Kaname's and Sousuke's demented high school life. TV PG (V) [courtesy of ADV Films]

Galaxy Angel -- "Milfeulle Sakuraba is the newest member of the Angel Brigade, a branch of the Transvall Empire military, whose primary mission is to search for the Lost Technology. The only problem is that no one actually knows what the Lost Technology is. So, instead, they are stuck doing menial tasks like looking for a lost cat, defusing a talking missile, and delivering an old school I.D. Is the galaxy really in safe hands with these misfits on duty?" ages: 13+ [courtesy of BANDAI Entertainment]

Gatekeepers -- An almost tongue-in-cheek series about high schcool students with special powers recruited by an elite organization to fight the alien invaders, who try to crush the human spirit with rudeness, red tape, and, iff that fails, large rampaging forms. Fun and action-filled. ages: 13+ [courtesy of Pioneer]

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex -- Section 9 handles terrorism in all its forms: renegade tanks, rogue cyber-hackers, political espionage, and police corruption. In a world where the line between man and machine is invisibly thin, it takes a remarkable team to beat back the new criminal tide. ages: 13+ [courtesy of BANDAI Entertainment]

Hyper Police -- Humans, monsters, and beasts try to live in peace after humanity has (once again) screwed everything up. Half human/half cat-monster Natsuki is a bounty hunter dedicated to bringing in criminals who's wreck the peace. If only she was a better shot and had better control over her lightning powers... ages: 13+ [courtesy of Image Entertainment]

Initial D -- "Takumi 'Tak' Fujiwara never stood out much -- until a yellow RX-7 refused to let him pass on one of his tofu delivery runs down Mount Akna. Little did Tak know that the driver was one of the hottest street racers areound, and when Tak outmaneuvered the RX-7 in his old '86 Toyota, he set himself up as the new driver to beat. Welcome to INITIAL D, where street racing teams battle over glory, passion, pain and revenge -- on the road and off!" ages: 13+ [courtesy of TOKYOPOP]

Kaleido Star -- Sora has always dreamed of performing with the acrobatic troupe Kaleidostar, and now she has a chance, if she can only prove herself. And with a little help from her friends, she just might manage. ages: 12+ [courtesy of ADV Films]

Last Exile -- In a world of airships, airborne musket battles, and warring kingdoms, Claus and Lavie are carrying on their fathers' tradition as airship messengers. But one particular package catapults them into an adventure they could never have imagined. ages: 13+ [courtesy of Pioneer]

Matango: Attack of the Mushroom People (live action) -- 1963, 90 mins. Dir. Ishiro Honda. . Five vacationers and two crewmen become stranded on a tropical island near the equator. The island has little edible food for them to use as they try to live in a fungus covered hulk while repairing Kessei's yacht. Eventually they struggle over the food rations which were left behind by the former crew. Soon they discover something unfriendly there... [courtesy of Media Blasters]

Mega 64 Version 2 (live action) -- 2006, 30 mins each. Dir. Rocco Botte. The ongoing serial of America's favorite videogame related comedy program continues with Mega 64 Version 2 as Rocko, Derek, Shawn, Marcus, Horatio and Dr. Poque combine real life with videogames to the shock and annoyance of an unknowing public. Featuring such famous skits as Paperboy and Katamari Damacy as well as the famous Ico skit. EAT AT JOES

Naruto Uncut -- not the edited-for-TV version. "Deep within the Hidden Leaf Village, sharp and cunning Ninja carry an ultimate power while Naruto Uzamaki carries inside the ultimate secret. Twelve yeas ago, the fourth Hokage sacrificed himself and saved the village by sealing the Nine-Tailed Fox Spirit in an orphaned baby boy. Now, this plucky prankster must do what it takes to achieve his life-long goal and become the next Hokage!" [courtesy of VIZ Media]

Negima! -- "Vampires, Robots, Sorcery... And that's all before Gym Class! Wizard-in-training Negi Springfield is only 10 years old, but he also happens to be the newest English teacher at the all-girl Mahora Academy. Too bad a bachelor's degree and an enchanted staff can't prepare a lad for the chaos of being surrounded by dozens of Junior High girls! If he can lead the class successfully, Negi will fulfill the final requirement in his quest to become a Magister Magorum... but if he messes it up and the students find out about his special powers, he is doomed to be transformed into a furry ermine! There's not a potion in the universe that can help a little boy relate to the insanity of an unusually rambunctious gaggle of young girls. Hopefully, with his smarts and big heart, Negi won't even need any magic to learn the secrets of growing up. Well, maybe a bit of magic wouldn't hurt!" TV PG [courtesy of Funimation]

Planetes -- A hard SF show set in the near future, when orbital exploration is commonplace and space debris is a menace, and the Debris Section does its best despite corporate politics. A very good show, combining sophisticated storytellling and character development with good animation. ages: 13+ [courtesy of BANDAI Entertainment]

Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight -- Five years after the War of Heroes, the Black Knight of Marmo is on a mission to do what his Emperor could not -- unite all nations under one ruler. Old heroes and new must answer the calll to once again defend Lodoss. A classic swords and sorcery anime. ages: 13+ [courtesy of Image Entertainment/U.S. Manga Corps]

Saber Marionette J -- Sometime in the distant future on a planet far, far away inhabited only by men, Otaru comes across an extraordinary marionette (female android) that actually has feelings. Of course, she's a total ditz. And then he finds another one. And another one. Would you believe they're all in love with him? Hilarity ensues. ages: 13+ [courtesy of BANDAI Entertainment]

Samurai Champloo -- A hip-hop remix of feudal era Japan, brought to you by the director of Cowboy Bebop. Topnotch story, animation, action, and characters. Mugen is a wildman, and Jin is methodical. If only Fuu can keep them from killing each other long enough to find the samurai from her past... ages: 16+ [courtesy of Pioneer]

Screwed (live action) -- 1998, 85mins. Dir. Teruo Ishii. Tadanobu Asano stars as Tsube, an unsuccessful cartoonist living hand-to-mouth in his girlfriend's apartment. As they move into a new low rent apartment, Tsube slowly begins to grow increasingly paranoid about the world around him and the ones closest to him in a turn reminiscent of the best of David Lynch. [courtesy of Panik House]

The Slayers -- Lina Inverse is the world's greatest treasure hunter, especially when she finds bandits she can vanquish with mega-overkill spells. When she teams up with Gourry, the worlds greatest (and dumbest) swordsman, they're unstoppable! And then the ultimate evil shows up.... ages: 13+ [courtesy of Central Park Media]

The Slayers Try -- Lina Inverse and gang are off to explore, eat like pigs, and throw really, really big spells in small spaces. Oh, and the dragons want them to do something about that plot to destroy everything... ages: 13+ [courtesy of Central Park Media]
