Video program descriptions

Adventures of the Mini-Goddess (used as filler between shows) -- The Oh! My Goddess characters (mainly the goddesses Urd and Skuld) return, but in the "handy petite size" in this series about having fun on a very small scale. Bite-sized and fun, each episode is about five minutes long. ages: All [courtesy of Pioneer]

Alive (live action) -- 2002, 119 mins. Dir. Ryuhei Kitamura. After surviving the electric chair, convict Tenshu is given the chance to either try again or become the subject of a brutal experiment squaring off against another condemned and a mysterious alien life force. Some times it pays to just die. [courtesy of Media Blasters]

Animation Runner Kuromi -- Kuromi has dreamed of getting a job in animation. But the reality is a whole lot different than she imagined when the production manager keels over with an ulcer and puts her in charge of the whole show! ages: 16+ [courtesy of Central Park Media/U.S. Manga Corps]

Astro Boy -- Astro Boy, first broadcast on Japanese television from 1963 to 1966, is the first Japanese television series that embodied the aesthetic that later became known as anime. It originated as a manga comic series started in 1951 by Osamu Tezuka. After enjoying success abroad, Astro Boy was remade in the 1980s as Shin Tetsuwan Atomu (Astroboy in the US and other Western countries) and again in 2003. For a time Astro Boy enjoyed a level of popularity in Japan equivalent to Disney's Mickey Mouse. ages: All [courtesy of The Right Stuf]

Atragon (live action) -- 1963, 96 mins. Dir. Ishiro Honda. The Toho classic from director Ishiro Honda pits humanity and the super submarine Atragon against the Mu Empire and their god Manda for a battle of supremacy. This means a lot of explosions and laser beams. Toho, the masters of Kaiju! [courtesy of Media Blasters]

Blind Beast vs. Killer Dwarf (live action) -- 2004, 95 mins. Dir. Teruo Ishii. Writer Monzo Kobayashi didn't ask to see the dark side of humanity, he just seems to be at the right place at the right time. After a night at the opera with and the appearance of a dwarf carrying a girl's severed arm, Monzo's writing habits will take him down a dark path to the films horrifying twist. [courtesy of Panik House]

Cowboy Bebop -- Bounty hunters Spike and Jet roam the solar system in the spaceship Bebop tracking down wanted fugitives to make ends meet. Solid music, characters, animation, fight sequence, and story, this is one of the best series made. Some violent scenes. ages: 13+ [courtesy of BANDAI Entertainment]

Cromartie High (live action) -- 2005, 85 mins. Dir. Yudai Yamaguchi. From the director of Battlefield Baseball comes the live action Cromartie High movie! A film in the uplifting veins of Stand and Deliver, Dangerous Minds, and to a lesser extent Dumb and Dumber. A film that shows true school spirit never fades, even in the face of stupidity, demonic possession, and alien attack. You wish your high school was this cool. [courtesy of Media Blasters]

Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (used as filler between shows in Video 2 and 9pm-9am in Video 1) -- Take Full Metal Panic and crank up the comedy. A very fun show that focuses on Kaname's and Sousuke's demented high school life. TV PG (V) [courtesy of ADV Films]

Godannar -- "Five years ago, as the Mimetic Beasts laid waste to Japan, Dannar Pilot Goh saved young Anna Aoi's life. Now, as they prepare to march down the aisle, a new Beast appears and Goh is summoned into battle once more. But he's not going alone; not if his blushing bride-to-be can help it! It's a honeymoon from hell as two stubborn mecha pilots bump heads, egos and other bits; but if Anna and Goh can mate their robots' interlocking parts, they'll form the ultimate marriage of man, woman and machine! The battle of the sexes and the battle for the future of manking are fought simultaneously in the wildest giant robot series ever, GODANNAR!" TV MA (VS) [courtesy of ADV Films]

Heat Guy J -- Daisuke and his android partner, J, are out to prevent crime before it happens, but with mob wars, beastmen, and serial bombers running amok, it'll take every ounce of skill (and a few bullet requisitions) to keep the city safe. ages: 13+ [courtesy of Pioneer]

The Irresponsible Captain Tylor -- How does the world's laziest man become the caption of the world's worst crew? Does the enemy stand a chance? Is he a genius or an idiot? He's Captain Tylor. ages: 13+ [courtesy of The Right Stuf]

Kaleido Star -- Sora has always dreamed of performing with the acrobatic troupe Kaleidostar, and now she has a chance, if she can only prove herself. And with a little help from her friends, she just might manage. ages: 12+ [courtesy of ADV Films]

Martian Successor Nadesico -- The Jovian Lizards have attacked Mars, and now they're after Earth! Only the hand-picked team of the Nadesico (the only private warship ever) has a chance against then. But who is really the enemy? Space/land mechas, fleet battles, interesting characters, and a good balance of comedy, action, and drama. ages: 12+ [courtesy of ADV Films]

Naruto Uncut -- not the edited-for-TV version. "Deep within the Hidden Leaf Village, sharp and cunning Ninja carry an ultimate power while Naruto Uzamaki carries inside the ultimate secret. Twelve yeas ago, the fourth Hokage sacrificed himself and saved the village by sealing the Nine-Tailed Fox Spirit in an orphaned baby boy. Now, this plucky prankster must do what it takes to achieve his life-long goal and become the next Hokage!" [courtesy of VIZ Media]

Patlabor -- Robots, or labors, are common construction tools, but along with that comes a new kind of crime. The policy form the SV2 to deal with labor crimes, but can SV2 survive itself? Although it has giant robots, the main drive in this series is the eccentric characters, and episodes vary from pure drama to action to comedy. ages: 13+ [courtesy of Central Park Media/U.S. Manga Corps]

Petite Princess Yucie -- Centering around Yucie, a 17 year old who is trapped in a 10 year old's body, the story follows her and her friends, all of who are designated as a Platinum Princess candidates. A Platinum Princess receives the Eternal Tiara which grants any wish, but only to the one it judges worthy and only one wish. TV PG [courtesy of ADV Films]

Ranma 1/2 -- Ranma is a martial artist with a curse: cold water turns him into a girl. Then there's the love triangles. And the un-cute, unwilling fiancé. And the host of strange people who usually either want to date and/or fight him, some of whom also have problems of their own with water. Life is never simple, but it is pretty funny. One of the classic anime comedy series. Occasional brief nudity. ages: 13+ [courtesy of Pioneer]

Rune Soldier -- Louie wants to be an adventurer, even though he should be studying wizardry. And he's an idiot who's better at beating monsters with his wand than using the right spells. But the women need a wizard. Can they keep him alive long enough to be useful? A fun swords and sorcery comedy. ages: 15+ [courtesy of ADV Films]

Saber Marionette J -- Sometime in the distant future on a planet far, far away inhabited only by men, Otaru comes across an extraordinary marionette (female android) that actually has feelings. Of course, she's a total ditz. And then he finds another one. And another one. Would you believe they're all in love with him? Hilarity ensues. ages: 13+ [courtesy of BANDAI Entertainment]

The Slayers -- Lina Inverse is the world's greatest treasure hunter, especially when she finds bandits she can vanquish with mega-overkill spells. When she teams up with Gourry, the worlds greatest (and dumbest) swordsman, they're unstoppable! And then the ultimate evil shows up.... ages: 13+ [courtesy of Central Park Media]

Tenchi Muyo GXP -- "My name is Seina Yamada, and I'm from Earth. Not too long ago, I was rescued from a terrible spacecraft accident and brought to a new life as a Galaxy Police Cadet! Unfortunately, my arrival at the Galactgic Academy was less than spectacular. In fact, it was downright destructive. If that wasn't bad enough, training was a nightmare because all the other cadets had special body enhancements making them stronger than me. Luckily, my trainer, Amane booked me a date at the body enhancement lab so I could compete. Now, I just have to find a way to advance through her rigorous training. Adventure is sure to be on the horizon, I only hope I can survive the upcoming challenges!" TV PG [courtesy of Funimation]
