Well, I was one of the attendees of that event. And I do believe a grand total of four people actively participated. (there was another guy, but all he did was hang out in the back)

The 4th guy was a dude named Rob. I didn't catch his last name, but he seemed to know Fred Patten and Alec Orrock (even though Mr. Orrock wasn't present). Rob was very informative and provided a view from an older anime fan's point of view.

And he saved the next panel on Fanzines, that's for sure. With all the noise you couldn't exactly hear Mr. Patten clearly (due to his stroke, he can't speak as well anymore), but Rob was able to fill in the blanks and tell us about it.

So... two things:
With an audience led discussion, I recommend having at least a moderator. A lot of people just opened the door, looked for a person in the front, and just left. When you get 3-4 people agreeing on the same point, it's not much of a discussion anymore. ^-^

And whoever that Rob guy was, invite him again. If I recall, he works in the video game industry now, worked for Animeigo, has lived in Japan for a number of years, and has been to the first conventions up in San Jose and stuff. Maybe you know him.

Tall skinny black dude? That's Rob Miles. I know how to find him, thanks for the tip.

yeah, yeah, that's the guy.

He certainly knows a lot about the early days of anime fandom. Even helped connect it to current fandom.

I felt very enlightened after those panels. ^^
(even if the sub/dub discussion drifted to something else entirely)

Well, just to chime in here. I found out about the panels I had been scheduled for _after_ the con. Seems someone (read: no one) failed to send me any info on this prior to the con.

I had sent a few e-mails asking about details and such and only got the "we'll be in touch with you" type responce.

Anyway, that said I now know I need to ride things a little closer for next year.

Enjoy!!
